The forecast says the air will reach 90°F. Your handheld thermometer reads 82°F in the water. Those values do not conflict. They describe different quantities, measured or predicted in different ways.
Read the time with the number
The NWS API supplies hourly forecast periods. Each period has a start and end, while the forecast itself has an update time. In the companion, choose the trip date and forecast hour. An old trip outside the returned window does not receive today’s weather as a substitute.
When you attach a forecast to a note, its hour, time zone and issue timestamp travel with it. The measured-water-temperature field stays empty until you enter an actual reading. Write your observed wind, clouds or rain separately if they differed.

An area forecast is useful context, but it is not a boat sensor or a guarantee. The app does not decide whether it is safe to launch. Use current official warnings and a return plan. Location access is optional; the lake-area forecast works without asking for your position.
